Phoenix dactylifera, the date palm. In various civilizations, the history of plants has always been deeply intertwined with that of man who very early deified some of them. The ancient peoples of the North had a particular devotion to the oak, the populations of the South venerated the palm tree. Indeed, in all the countries where the palm tree grows, it pays the legends and holds the first place in superstitions and attentions.

Throughout classical antiquity, the palm tree is compared to the sun of which it would be the green lookalike. Its leaves symbolize authority and glory. The ancients gave it the same name as the legendary bird which added to its extraordinary longevity the prodigious power to rise from its own ashes after being consumed under the effect of its own heat. They symbolized the cycles of death and resurrection, one for plants and the other for animals.

The palm tree was one of the symbols of the goddess Artemis as well as Nausikáa.
In Greek mythology, Nausikáa, daughter of the king of the Phaeacians, is the heroine full of freshness and charm that Homer portrays in two passages of the Odyssey. She picks up the shipwrecked Odysseus on the shore and takes him to the palace of his parents, King Alkinoos and Queen Arete. Courageous and generous, Nausikáa inspires many authors and artists during and after Antiquity, up to the present day. In the Odyssey, she is the only one who does not flee when she finds Odysseus stranded, naked, dirty and hungry, after the sinking of his ship. Nausikáa, then takes care of him, taking care of his toilet, giving him clothes and a snack. Then she leads him to his parents. Alkinoos offers Odysseus the hand of his daughter; but the hero prefers to leave as soon as possible.
