In Greek mythology, Persephone is one of the main chthonic deities, daughter of Zeus and Demeter and also wife of Hades. She is first known simply as Kore the maiden, as opposed to Demeter, the mother.

Hades kidnapped Persephone, to make her his wife in the underworld.

This event plunged Demeter into affliction who undertook a quest to find her. His dismay at the disappearance of his daughter would have diverted his attention from the crops and caused a famine. It is in the face of the common refusal of Demeter and Persephone to accept their separation and in the face of the dramatic consequences that ensued for men and gods; the first deprived of food, the second of offerings, that Zeus found a compromise between union and separation. According to this compromise, Persephone bound to the underworld as she had broken the fast by eating a pomegranate seed, would spend the spring and summer on earth, and then rule the rest of the time in the underworld.

Perséphone is likened to Proserpina in Roman mythology and owns the famous Champs Élysées as its domain.

She seems to have accepted her role as Queen of the Dead, since in the legends she always acts in agreement with her husband, even showing herself to be tough and inflexible.

However, some authors do not recognize her as the daughter of Demeter, but as that of the Styx, and according to them, Persephone has always been the goddess of the Underworld.

Persephone is also originally a goddess of agriculture just like Demeter. Among the Greeks, the fertility of the soil was closely linked to death, and the grains of seed were kept in the dark during the summer months, before sowing in the fall.
