Pandora's Locket

For this entirely hand-forged Talisman, I associated three gems, the prehnite in marquise at the top, a small mauve tanzanite at the base and a faceted pink Tourmaline [1.48 cts] whose transparency makes it possible to guess the name of Elpis inside Pandora's box/jar. All these stones are natural, without treatment.

Etching with ancient Greek motifs on the perimeter and the front of the box. This creation is accompanied by its case watercolored by me with the effigy of the divinity.

[50mm high and 30mm wide, weight 15.5g]

It is a Unique Creation that I will not reproduce.

Pandora means -adorned with all gifts- or -she who gives everything-. In Greek mythology, Pandora or Pandora is the first human woman, fashioned in clay by Hephaestus and animated by the goddess Athena. It is associated with the legend of "Pandora's box" — in fact, a jar. According to Hesiod, Pandora was created on the order of Zeus who wanted revenge on men for the theft of fire by Prometheus. It was thus made by Hephaestus, Athena then gave it life, taught it manual skill (including the art of weaving), Aphrodite gave it beauty, Apollo gave it musical talent, Hermes the art of persuasion, lying and curiosity, Hera gave him jealousy and finally "Zeus gave him the word and the name of Pandora, because it is all (pan in Greek) the inhabitants of Olympus who make present (dôron in Greek), misfortune to men who eat the bread.” Epimetheus accepted Pandora's hand, although he had promised Prometheus, his brother, to refuse gifts from Zeus.

Pandora brought with her a mysterious jar that Zeus had forbidden her to open. It contained all the evils of humanity, including Old Age, Illness, War, Famine, Misery, Madness, Vice, Deceit, Passion, Pride and Hope. Yielding to the curiosity that Hermes had given her […] Pandora let escape all the evils from the jar from which they were enclosed; only Hope remained at the bottom, Pandora having replaced the lid by the will of Zeus.

The reason for the presence of Hope among evils is to be found in a better translation of the Greek text. The exact term is Elpís, which is defined as the expectation of something; wrongly translated as -hope-. A better translation would have been apprehension, even irrational fear. By this definition, through Pandora's timely closing of the jar, humanity will only suffer evils, not the expectation of those evils, which is probably the worst of all.
