Mjöllnir, going back to the Indo-European etymological roots, would strictly speaking mean "one who crushes or crushes by producing lightning".
In Old Icelandic texts, Mjölnir is identified as hamarr, meaning "hammer", but also "stone, rock, boulder" designating stone or stone tool. It also refers to the idea of producing sparks → lightning, the stone being originally also used to light the fire.
Mjöllnir is a short-handled hammer with many magical properties. Considered the most powerful weapon of the gods, it symbolizes the protection of the universe against the forces of chaos. This fabulous weapon forged by the dwarves is capable of returning to the hand of its caster. Its size was variable since it could be put in a pocket. It is thus the most formidable weapon used by Thor to fight against anyone, and in particular the Giants, who dares to attack the supremacy of the Aesir.
In shamanic symbolism, the blacksmith being the being closest to the shaman, this means that the powers used can be double-edged, in other words turn against you.
Its power is so great that it is impossible to handle it without using iron gloves. This weapon will allow Thor to split a mountain, resurrect his goats, Tanngrisnir and Tanngnjostr, which served as a meal, consecrate Balder's funeral boat or a wedding and above all defeat the Giants: he smashes the head of a Giant, builder of Asgard, and many others until the moment of Ragnarök where he will kill the snake Jormungand before perishing poisoned by the monster.
Mjöllnir will go to his sons Magni and Modi who will survive the cataclysm.
