In Norse mythology, Idunn would mean ;the one who rejuvenates, renews, goddess of eternal youth, of Love and wife of the god of Poetry, Bragi. She holds a chest of wonderful apples allowing the mortal Norse Gods to preserve their youth and vivre until the day of Ragnarök.
The name of Idunn is to be compared to its probable Indo-European etymological source Eden.
One of the only legend known to date is this: During a journey, Odin, Loki and Hoenir tried to roast an ox, in vain. Discussing among themselves the reasons for this mystery, a large eagle assured them that he was responsible for this miracle and that if they invited him to the meal, he would lift the spell. Hungry, the gods agreed. The eagle arrogated to itself the best pieces, leaving the carcass to the bewildered gods. Loki, angry, hit the eagle with a branch, which took off, dragging him after him. The eagle turned out to be the giant Thiazi. The latter told him that he just wanted to see Idunn and her golden apples in a quiet place, known to him. Loki agreed to these terms in order to regain his freedom. Returning to Asgard, he told Idunn that he had seen apples even more beautiful than his in a place not far away. He brought it to Thiazi who took it away.
The gods then lost their youth, their hair turned white and their strength declined. It didn't take them long to realize that Loki was involved in Idunn's disappearance thanks to Odin. Loki, threatened, promised to bring her back. He asked Freyja for her falcon plumage and flew north to Thiazi's house. By a coincidence, Idunn was there alone. Loki changed her into a nut to facilitate his return to Asgard. The giant, launched in pursuit of them in his eagle form, perished while flying over a huge pyre which the gods set on fire. The gods were able to eat the apples of youth again.
