The "did you know"
The etymology of amethyst strangely relates to the legends linked to it. Its name comes from the Greek amethystos which means to protect against drunkenness. In the past it was used as a chalice to guard against possible poisoning attempts during banquets.
In reality, this origin refers to the mythical use of amethyst.
In Greek mythology, Dionysus is a god recognized for his excessiveness, his madness and his pronounced taste for wine. Completely in love with the young Amethystos, he woos her when she wishes to remain chaste. To protect her, the goddess Artemis transforms her into white crystal.
Humiliated, Dionysos spills wine on the stone which then takes on its purple hue.
