*In the Greek mythology Charon is the son of Erebus (the Darkness) and nyx(the night),he has brothers, among others,Hypnos and Thanatos. He shares with Hermès the qualifier of psychopomp;, ;conductor of souls; in Greek.
He is the ferryman of the underworld on the marshes of the Acheron, whose function was to cross the Styx for an obol, to the souls of the dead who have received a burial to join the kingdom of Hades, which is why it is often referred to by the terms navigator; or nocher. From where the custom of placing an obol (a low-value Greek coin) under the dead man tongue before his burial. Those who could not pay had to wander along the banks of the Styx river for a hundred years. Although rare for Charon to let a living mortal pass,he had to carry some of them who had ventured into these dark places.
Hercules could not have passed if he had not used force, going and returning, by hitting the passer with his own pole. Orpheus charmed Charon with his song and hislyre, and put the dog Cerberus to sleep, to be able to bring back his beloved,Eurydice.Psyche came to ask Persephone for a precious bottle for Aphrodite, had not forgotten to take two obols to pay him there and back, Charon could say nothing. Later, Dante accompanied by Virgil will try to cross Achéron but Charon is opposed to it. Thanks to a fainting Dante manages to pass.
