Baba Yaga is a figure of Russian tales who is part of the pantheon of supernatural beings of Slavic folklore.
This Baba Yaga's folk side remains relatively unknown in the Western and non-Russian-speaking world.
In Baba Yaga, the name means more the old woman, without being isolated from the other meanings: witch, forest woman, grandmother, (peasant or even midwife). – It is proven first of all that Baba Yaga is not a character without dimensions and depth.
On the contrary: kidnapping witch, psychopomp, cannibal, protector of births, place, nature and harvest, Baba Yaga is ambiguous.
The reappearance of Baba Yaga in the incantations testifies to the fact that she did not exist only as a character of the tales but that she was also part of the popular religion alongside the leshii, rusalka, kikimora and domovoi.
By these examples, it is obvious that Baba Yaga can be a goddess, or more strictly, a genius of nature. She is sometimes leshachikha, the wife of leshii, spirit of the forest, and herself a spirit of the woods by living in her secluded isba in the dense forests.
Thus, she is also close to Muma Pădurii, the Mother of the Forest of Romanian folklore, living in a hut placed on a rooster's legs, surrounded by a fence strewn with skulls, and stealing children.
This aspect of forest genius tells us another dimension of Baba Yaga identifying her with another very important figure of Slavic folklore where she appears especially in the rye fields and protects the harvest.
Another of Yaga versions is the drakaina, a female dragon with human characteristics. These entities have the heads and torsos of women, but the lower part of their bodies are in the form of snakes. They constitute a very important mythological category within the Eurasian imagination, best known thanks to Mélusine, queen half-woman half-snake.
For some scholars, these women-hybrids, originating from the Mother Goddess, manifest a deep dualism as beneficial-evil beings, aggressors-donors.
