Part III
It is in recent folklore that Baba Yaga is portrayed as a witch with cannibalistic tendencies, bogeyman and great threat to children, especially infants, and their mothers.
She appears as Ježibaba, the strix/striga of Slovak tales. She even steals milk from cows in other Western tales.
Also demonic figure, related to supernatural women through spinning, monstrous appearance, control of natural phenomena, realm of the dead –
Pyatnitsa, an important saint in popular East Slavic traditions, is related to Baba Yaga, personifying Friday and protector of harvests – she punishes women who spin on the fifth day of the week. The same goes for the nocturnal fairy in Isère and Savoie during the Twelve Days of Christmas, (relating to the Carnival-Lent cycle) which enters homes to punish those who work at midnight or on public holidays, in particular lacemakers and spinners.
In reality, certain punitive aspects of Baba Yaga would originate from the interpretation of certain shamanic rites of primitive societies dedicated to the mother goddess. For example the child's cooking type : a boy goes to Baba Yaga's isba, the latter asks her daughter to cook it. The boy takes a bad position in the oven, Baba Yaga wants to explain to him how to land and gets into the oven and the boy closes the door by trapping Baba Yaga there in this way.
Behind this motif, a ritual, according to which a baby is placed in the oven three times to strengthen it, is well hidden behind the evil action, in reality, a rite of passage, initiation, or magical action with a beneficial vocation. Moreover, in at least three Slovak tales, Ježibaba is a donor, appearing in the form of three sisters (a characteristic that reminds us of the three -bb3b-136bad5cf58d_and fairy tales) who help the hero escape the ogre who is chasing him, give him food, and lend him their magic dogs.
